Cat Chat
10 April, 2009 by Puss
On Holy Thursday, Geelong and Collingwood kicked off the Easter long weekend at the MCG. In Round 3, the Cats got the chocolates and made boiled lollies of the Magpies! Find out how with a wrap up of the action.
GEELONG and COLLINGWOOD have shared a healthy rivalry over the decades and this week's clash at the Home of Football promised to be no exception. In recent times, the Magpies have proved to be one of the few teams to match it with the Cats and with Brad Ottens out of the picture, the Magpies looked set to do it all again. Welcoming back Dale Thomas from a bout of gastroenteritis, the Magpies could've been forgiven for fancying themselves. Let's see how the Cats put the Pies in their place, shall we?
As expected, Josh Fraser dominated the ruck and gave the Magpies 1st use of the footy in the 1st term. Paying immediate dividends, the Magpies swooped on the ball and within 30secs of play, Alan Didak was seen running into an open goal. Moments later, the umpire caught the Cats' runner in the wrong spot at the wrong time and Shannon Cox goaled on the back of a rarely seen event. Impressing with more than just his tattoo, impressive newcomer, Dayne Beams, impressed upon the scoreboard and Dale Thomas showed no signs of gastro, quick to react in the goalsquare. With good reason, the Magpies were warbling with delight when John Anthony's little shove went unnoticed, but in reality, they should've been further ahead if not for a few hiccups in front. At the other end, things were flat for the Cats, with only Joel Selwood & Gary Ablett Jnr. showing any initiative.
In the 2nd stanza, the Magpies' warble soon turned to a wobble with Leigh Brown holding court. Missing his 3rd set shot, things got contagious as Tarkyn Lockyer & Josh Fraser joined in. Quelled by Harry Taylor, Travis Cloke went missing in action and with a whiff of weakness hanging in the air, the Cats pounced. All of a sudden, Paul Chapman seemed to be everywhere at once and Steve Johnson shrugged off a sluggish start to provide some moments of wonder on the boundary. Travis Varcoe conjured a couple from nothing and Tom Hawkins presented well. By 1/2 time, the Cats had piled on 8 unanswered goals and the tables were turned on the Pies.
During the 3rd quarter, the Magpies continued to kick themselves out of it. Lockyer racked up his 3rd behind and Didak missed a sitter on the run. However, things were not all doom & gloom. Paul Medhurst converted after marking strongly and Brad Dick had a 100% conversion rate with his 1st kick of the night. Scott Pendlebury & Dane Swan found more of the footy, while Daisy Thomas' flower blossomed with more space on the paddock. Even Brown found the big sticks and things were looking up, but when Fraser failed to hold his nerve on the bell, the Magpies were left ruing their chances.
Given a spray by Bomber Thompson at the last huddle, the Cats responded in the last hoorah with 3 quick majors. Although Leon Davis tried to re-ignite his team with a low drill from 50m, there would be no corroboree for the Magpies because Chapman was having a party of his own. Adding to his tally and with his hand in yet another, Chappy was happy to put the result beyond doubt. To their credit, the Magpies fought out the game to the bitter end. Lockyer & Fraser removed the chewy from their boots, while Medhurst proved to be the Magpies' sole straight shooter. All in vain however, as the Cheshire Cats grinned by 27pts. Purrr...
Well there you have it, meow for now.
Always on the ball
Puss.
